We’ve treated the Small house as a living EXPERIMENT for the last five years. We’ve perfected it, and we’re ready to share it with you.

Meet

Madison & mark,

Architects (and inhabitants)

of the Small House.

Hi!

We are the founders of Small House. Along with our son, George, we built and live in the Original Small House, and we want to share it with you.

Let us take you on a little journey to explain how we ended up here…

IT all began

in a 1972 airstream.

When Madison and Mark Talley started Tall Architects in the summer of 2014, they wondered how they could live affordably, scrappy even, while starting a business. The answer turned up in the form of a 1972 Airstream (previously used as a duck hunting camp) that they bought for $1400. After an intensive renovation project and three years of living in said Airstream, they decided it was time for a more palatial residence. Enter the Small House.

A HOME WITH

NO MORTGAGE.

The Small House was conceived as an answer to having a house but no mortgage. Madison and Mark designed and built only what they could afford, which ended up being a 480-square-foot home. Being architects, they knew how to carve out space and make the most of the small footprint.

NOW, Let’s share it

with the world!

Five years and one son (George) later, they are still happily residing in the Small House and want to spread their good fortune (and ingenious use of space) to others.
